Helpless: Can Developmental Trauma Cause Someone To Feel Helpless?

Developmental trauma is a type of trauma that results from a traumatic experience during development, and it can have a major impact on mental, emotional, and physical well-being. It is considered to be a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and is characterized by recurring symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and insomnia. People who suffer from developmental trauma often feel hopeless and helpless.

When a person is exposed to a traumatic event during development, such as experiencing a physical or emotional abuse, they can become conditioned to expect this type of treatment when they are confronted with similar experiences as they grow older. This can lead to lingering feelings of helplessness. It is difficult to move beyond these negative experiences when they are ingrained in the mind, making it difficult to feel capable of handling similar difficult situations.

The inability to control one’s emotions and reactions to future traumatic events can lead to a sense of helplessness. People may feel trapped and unable to move forward, leading to a state of resignation and a lack of motivation. This can further eliminate hope and a sense of optimism, resulting in withdrawing from activities and relationships.

In order to help someone who has experienced developmental trauma, psychological treatment is needed. This can include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), or other therapeutic methods. These therapies are designed to help a person recognize the patterns of helplessness and how to overcome them.

It is important to remember that a person suffering from developmental trauma can take small steps to improve their outlook, such as taking part in self-care activities, talking with a supportive person, or seeking professional help. Understanding the source of these feelings can help to reduce the sense of helplessness and allow an individual to move forward.
